"Plague 99" by Jean Ure Critical Response I've just finished reading a book by Jean Ure called "Plague 99".
It takes place in London 1999, and is the story of three school children called Fran, Shahid and Harriet as London is terrorized by a terrible and deadly plague for which there is no cure.
In another example, Eco investigates how we can recognize a Bach suite for solo cello, even when played by different soloists or transcribed for the recorder.
Throughout, Eco gamely reconsiders his 1976 work, A Theory of Semiotics, over which many a gauntlet was testily thrown, and revisits other key moments in the history of semiotic research.
It is actually a reassertion of Socrates' "the unexamined life is not worth living." There seem, however, to be few positive or concrete symptoms of distress before man comes to terms with his existence in the universe. Many years ago, I worked with a guy who asked me "Am I in your world, or are you in mine?
On the contrary, there seem to be only negatives and nothings to confirm this distressed feeling. " He added "What if earth, or perhaps our universe is simply a grain of sand in bigger place?I only wish that, there were more blogs, that touched on the area of philosophy. Like many atheist , Camus revealed a longing for God.He wrote, for everyone who is alone, with God and without a master, the weight of days is dreadful"(The Fall 33).The simple fact of it is, The difference between your universe and anyone else's is a simple shifting of perspective ! The universe became an entity only perceptible in its mind and feeling of hope with the possibility of a creator.Nature's perfection could only be attributed to a concrete idea similar to the thinking mechanism of mankind. The best justification is a holy purpose decided by a greater entity than mankind. Non, Thank you for pointing to my wrong interpretation. "It is difficult for humans to imagine the universe as infinite. And Camus is urging beyond this explanation of the world as seen from external and 'other' leading to super natural postulations. From our experiences, we tend to believe that anything has a beginning and an end." Yeah Dela as much as it pained me to, I had to to do it, You cant mess with the code.It all starts with Fran coming home from a camp, which is designed to test people's ability to survive with absolutely no contact with the outside world. When she comes home she finds that the streets are almost totally empty in London and that there are barricades on the roads to the part of London that she lives in."But if I did that, then my argument against God collapsed too-for the argument depended on saying that the world was really unjust, not simply that it did not happen to please my private fancies." Thus, "in the very act of trying to prove that God did not exist-in other words, that the whole of reality was senseless-I found to assume that one part of reality-namely my idea of justice-was full of sense" (Surprised by Joy, C. Lewis 45,46)."The unexamined life is not worth living." I agree!
